What Happens When Our Mind’s Ego Takes Over?
Our mind’s ego is important for everyday survival. However, most people allow it to dominate the other two aspects of our being: Spirit/Energy and Soul.
For instance, if our daily lives are driven by to-do lists, work expectations, and fear-based beliefs, we’re allowing our ego/mind to take the driver’s seat. This drains our energy and spirit, leaving us tired, less happy, and stressed — which can lead to compensatory addictions.
Addictions aren’t limited to the stereotypical reliance on alcohol or drugs; they can also show up through food, reading, or working out. While some addictions are certainly “healthier” than others, they’re still used as a way to artificially elevate one’s spirit.
Additionally, when our mind’s ego is in overdrive, we struggle to connect with our soul’s intuition — which is divinely guided and serves as our best compass to navigate life.
Understanding the Importance of a Regulated Spirit and Energy
For many people, the work needs to begin with the energy/spiritual self — because it's often the most neglected. When our energy and spirit become turbulent, it significantly affects how our mind/ego prioritizes tasks, ideas, and actions.
For example, rather than thoughtfully choosing the best design for a marketing campaign, someone might hastily select the first option that seems to work — simply due to anxiety over an impending deadline.
Our thoughts and actions, driven by the mind’s ego, may also be triggered by unresolved subconscious emotions. By diving deep into these emotional patterns, we can better understand why we think and react the way we do.
How to Regulate Our Spirit/Energy — aka “Inner Light”
So the next question is: How do we regulate our energy/spirit, or what I like to call our “inner light”?
If we’re trying to better understand our triggers — the situations that cause us to lose our cool or composure — we need to trace them back to childhood and identify the first time we felt that emotion. Doing this kind of inner work reveals the “why” behind our reactions and empowers us to overcome those triggers, allowing for real transformation.
For example, if a loved one repeatedly neglects chores (trigger), and that results in angry outbursts, the why might stem from subconscious feelings of abandonment. The lack of help is interpreted as a lack of love.
We can further regulate our energy/spirit by:
Learning how to shift our perspectives
Forgiving and letting go of situations or emotions that no longer serve us
Protecting our energy from people who drain it
Meditation and prayer also play a big role in aligning our ego and conscious mind with our subconscious spirit and energy. These practices help take actionable steps that align our spirit/energy with our ego.
As a result, the noise fades away — and we reconnect with our soul.
